If you are looking to purchase one of the many LCD monitor than you should understand all the different specifications of the models being offered. Bigger is not always necessarily better and you want to compare the different options. In order to understand everything you need to make sure you know what each of the terms that are being discussed mean.
The size of your monitor will be measured on the diagonal from the bottom lower corner to the opposite top corner. Some may give actual length and width measurements but be wary as these can be estimates or rounded. You want to look at the actual screen size when looking at the measurement, so the actual TV may be larger than this given number.
The number of pixels in each direction is also important and this is known as the aspect ratio. This ratio tells you how many horizontal pixels they are per vertical pixels. Common aspect ratios is 4:3 while high definition is 16:9. The latest HDTV are ultra wide screen that has a ratio of 2:1. Where you place your TV and then view the screen will affect this ratio.
All LCD monitors will have a native resolution that lets you know the total number of pixels. Generally the more pixels the better picture you will have on the screen.
You also want to look at the total number of pixels also known as the resolution as the more pixels you have the better the picture quality. There are recommended guidelines for setting the resolution and if you set your resolution to low than this can result in extrapolation which produces a fuzzy picture.
This measurement does vary throughout the monitor so the given number will be the highest contrast ration found on the TV, so it will not apply to the whole screen. Basically this means that the whites will bright and black very dark.
